The Basics
What is Café Cartographer?
Café Cartographer is a free iOS app that helps you find independent cafés matched to your current vibe — your mood, your work-style, and your taste — instead of just the closest five-star result. Our editorial focus is built around independent cafés.
Is Café Cartographer free?
Yes. The app is free to download and use on iOS. Core discovery — search, Vibe Matching, EB's recommendations — will always be free. We may add optional premium features in the future.
Is there an Android version?
Not yet. Café Cartographer is currently iOS-only. Android is on our roadmap.
Do I need an account to use the app?
No — you can browse and get recommendations without an account. An account unlocks Coffee Passport (your personal café journey), Lattegrams (capture and share café moments through your phone's native share sheet), and personalized recommendations from EB that improve over time as you use the app.
How It Works
How does Vibe Matching work?
Every café in Café Cartographer is profiled across four dimensions: Ambiance, Workability, Aesthetic, and Crowd Vibe. When you tell EB what you need — say, a quiet spot to work for two hours, or a buzzy place to meet a friend — the app ranks cafés against that specific need, not against a static five-star average. The same café might be a perfect match for one situation and a poor match for another. Vibe Matching models that.
What is EB?
EB is the in-app personal café guide. EB asks you a few quick questions about your current mood and what you're trying to do, then matches you to a café that fits. The more you use the app, the better EB gets at understanding your preferences.
What is "Just Tell Me" mode?
Just Tell Me is for the days when you don't want to browse, compare, or scroll. Tap the button, give EB a couple of quick signals, and get a single recommendation. No carousel, no list — one café, decision made.
What is Coffee Passport?
Coffee Passport is your personal café journey, mapped. Every café you visit gets stamped into your passport, building a visual record of your café history. It works on a city, country, or worldwide scale — useful for both daily routine and travel.
What are Lattegrams?
Lattegrams are how Café Cartographer turns the café-photo moment into a one-tap action. You capture and frame the shot in the app, then share it out through your phone's native share sheet — to iMessage, Instagram, your camera roll, wherever. There's no in-app social feed; Lattegrams meet your photos where they actually live.
Coverage & Cafés
What cities does Café Cartographer cover?
Café Cartographer launches city by city, only where we have real curated independent café data. We don't auto-import or pad coverage with scraped listings. Open the app to see currently supported metros. New cities are added regularly — tell us where you want to see Café Cartographer next.
How are cafés added to the app?
Cafés are reviewed and onboarded by our team. Our intake is built around independent operators, and we profile each café across our Vibe Matching dimensions. We don't auto-import from third-party café databases. If you'd like to suggest a café, contact us through the in-app support page.
Why is Café Cartographer focused on independent cafés?
Because we believe independent cafés are categorically different. They're where local culture lives, where the coffee has a point of view, and where the café is shaped by humans rather than corporate playbooks. Chains have plenty of discovery surfaces already; we'd rather spend our editorial energy where the indie scene needs help being found.
Comparisons
How is Café Cartographer different from Yelp?
Three differences. First, we're built editorially around independent cafés — not as one filter among many, but as the focus of the product. Second, our recommendations are matched to your current mood and need via Vibe Matching, not to a static average rating. Third, we're built specifically for café culture — not as a general business directory where cafés are one category among many.
How is Café Cartographer different from Google Maps?
Google Maps ranks by distance, popularity, and rating average. Café Cartographer ranks by fit — how well a café matches what you're trying to do, right now. Our curation also leans hard toward independent cafés, which is something a general-purpose map will never do.
Why not just use Instagram or TikTok for café discovery?
Social platforms surface what's photogenic and viral, which doesn't always overlap with what's actually good or what fits your needs today. Café Cartographer is built for utility-first discovery — beautiful when it should be, but always functional.
